The Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Akeem Owoade, has formally moved into the ancient Alaafin’s Palace in Oyo town, marking a significant cultural milestone for the Oyo Kingdom and the wider Yoruba race.
The move comes nine months after his installation as the 46th traditional ruler of the historic kingdom. Residents of Oyo town welcomed their monarch with celebrations, describing him as a serious-minded Paramount Ruler committed to development, peace, unity, and mutual coexistence.

Reverend Dr. Kolade Oladele, the Alaafin’s Personal Assistant, supervised the rehabilitation works on the palace, which had fallen into disrepair. The palace is an architectural masterpiece featuring courtyards, halls, and shrines, and is a living museum showcasing Yoruba culture and tradition.
Oba Akeem Owoade was enthroned as the 46th Alaafin of Oyo on April 5, 2025, after Governor Seyi Makinde presented him with the staff of office on January 13, 2025. He completed the 21-day traditional rites, known as Oro Ipebi, on March 29, 2025.
The Alaafin’s throne, also known as the “Abeebitan,” is a symbol of immense importance in the Oyo Kingdom, representing the monarch’s authority, power, and spiritual significance.
The throne is considered sacred, and only the monarch is allowed to sit on it. It plays a significant role in various ceremonies and rituals, including the annual Odun Oba festival, where the Alaafin sits on the throne to receive homage from his subjects and dignitaries.
