A court in Edo State has ordered the remand of 52 protesters, including Ambrose Alli University (AAU) students, arrested for participating in a protest against kidnapping and insecurity in Ekpoma. The protesters face charges of malicious damage and armed robbery, with their bail application referred to the Ubiaja High Court. The case has been adjourned to February 26, 2026, for further hearing.
The protest, initially peaceful, was reportedly hijacked by hoodlums who looted shops and vandalized the Onojie of Ekpoma’s palace. The police confirmed the protest was hijacked and those involved in violent acts have been arrested.

The Edo State Government assures residents of its commitment to protecting lives and property, and those responsible for the violence will face justice.
The protest was sparked by rising kidnapping cases, with residents demanding government action and improved security measures. The demonstration turned violent, with reports of looting, vandalism, and a soldier shooting 32-year-old Osagie Abraham.
The situation in Ekpoma remains tense, with residents still reeling from the aftermath of the protest.
