The Kwara State Government has ordered the immediate closure of the Kwara State College of Education, Oro, citing escalating security threats in the area, a decision that has drawn criticism from the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
The closure, outlined in an internal memo dated January 20, 2026, was issued by the Ministry of Tertiary Education, Science and Technology and signed by Commissioner Sa’adatu Modibbo-Kawu.
The memo directed the college management to suspend all academic activities with immediate effect, following approval from Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq.
According to the ministry, the action responds to growing insecurity around the institution and forms part of a wider directive affecting schools across the local government area.
“The measure is taken in the best interest of the safety and security of staff, students and the surrounding community,” the memo stated.

It further noted that the closure will remain in effect pending a comprehensive security review, after which new directives will be issued.
College management was also instructed to submit a compliance report to the ministry without delay.
The PDP, however, condemned the move, accusing the state government of failing to tackle insecurity effectively.
In a statement signed by State Publicity Secretary Olusegun Olusola Adewara, the party described the closure as “surrendering to criminals” and cautioned that it could worsen economic and educational challenges in Kwara South.
“Education must not become the casualty of insecurity,” the party said, urging traditional rulers and other stakeholders to intervene to prevent prolonged disruption to learning in the region.
