Commonwealth Medallist Favour Ashe Switches Allegiance from Nigeria to Qatar

Two-time national champion and Commonwealth Games medallist Favour Ashe has formally completed a transfer of sporting allegiance from Nigeria to Qatar, attributing the move to persistent concerns over athlete welfare and systemic shortcomings in the country’s athletics framework.

The sprint star confirmed his decision in an interview, where he highlighted inadequate training facilities and what he described as poor treatment during his years representing Nigeria in international competitions.

According to Ashe, the decision followed prolonged structural challenges that, in his view, limited his professional growth.

While acknowledging his accomplishments with Team Nigeria, he stressed that the search for improved professional conditions, stability and long-term development opportunities ultimately shaped his choice.

His departure is expected to reinforce Qatar’s sprint programme, adding experience and international pedigree to its track and field roster.

However, the move also intensifies scrutiny of Nigeria’s athletics ecosystem, particularly issues surrounding funding, infrastructure, athlete management and welfare.
