Adamawa State Governor, Ahmadu Fintiri, has defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), citing the developmental interest of the people of Adamawa State. He announced his decision in a statewide broadcast, stating that his entire cabinet and PDP officials are joining him in this move.
This development comes after weeks of speculation about Fintiri’s possible defection, with some sources indicating that talks between him and the APC had been ongoing since 2024. Fintiri’s decision is seen as a significant boost to President Bola Tinubu’s administration, particularly as it comes from Atiku Abubakar’s home state.
Fintiri emphasized that his action is driven by the wishes of the people, saying, “If my people want me to join APC, I will not object because politics is all about the people”.
The Adamawa State governor and Atiku are both the states heavyweights but no more allies. Atiku, a former vice‑president and PDP presidential candidate has long been the state’s PDP kingmaker, while Fintiri rose through the same party and even chaired its 2025 national convention.
Fintiri’s defection to the APC was framed as a direct blow to Atiku, with Tinubu’s camp openly taunting Atiku over the loss . So they share a home‑state base, but politically they’re now on opposite sides.
