The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Kano Strategic Command, has arrested six suspects for alleged involvement in illicit drug activities during a raid near the old site of Bayero University, Kano (BUK).
The operation also led to the dismantling of several drug joints within and around the university environment. It was carried out in response to rising concerns over the use of areas around tertiary institutions for drug trafficking and substance abuse.
Confirming the raid on Monday, the Public Relations Officer of the Kano Strategic Command, Assistant Superintendent of Narcotics Sadiq Maigatari, said the exercise was conducted under the leadership of Commander CN DY Lawal.
Maigatari said the action followed a formal complaint from the university management about suspected drug dealers and users operating within the institution and adjoining communities.
The Command, he said, acted swiftly under Operation Sharar Mafaka, a special initiative aimed at dislodging individuals trading in and consuming illicit substances around educational facilities.
“Six suspects were apprehended during the operation, while items linked to the illegal activities were seized and destroyed,” Maigatari stated.
“This action demonstrates our commitment to ensuring a drug-free environment where students, staff, and their families can live and work safely. We will continue to dislodge and occupy all drug joints under Operation Sharar Mafaka,” he added.
The Command commended the BUK management for promptly reporting the matter and cooperating with security agencies. It also urged the public and institutions to report suspicious activities to help security agencies dismantle drug hideouts across the state.
The NDLEA warned that using government or educational facilities for drug trading or consumption would not be tolerated.
