INEC Rolls Out 2027 Election Calendar Under New Law

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has released a revised timetable for the 2027 general elections, following the enactment of the Electoral Act 2026. According to INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, the commission will issue a revised schedule to align with the new law.

The original dates announced were:

– Presidential and National Assembly Elections: Saturday, February 20, 2027

– Governorship and State Assembly Elections: Saturday, March 6, 2027

However, INEC had previously denied releasing any timetable, stating that any such information was false and misleading.

The commission has begun preparations for the 2027 elections, including continuous voter registration, party primaries, and candidate nominations.

The new Electoral Act 2026 also gave INEC flexibility to adjust the calendar (notice period cut to 300 days), and officials said the shift helps separate the presidential and state contests, easing security and operational burdens
