James Milner etched his name into Premier League history on Saturday, becoming the league’s all-time appearance record-holder after starting for Brighton & Hove Albion in their away match against Brentford.

The 40-year-old midfielder made his 654th Premier League appearance, surpassing former Aston Villa and Manchester City star Gareth Barry to claim the outright record.

Milner’s achievement highlights a career defined by longevity, consistency, and professionalism. He made his Premier League debut in 2002 with Leeds United at just 16 and later played for Newcastle United, Aston Villa, Manchester City, and Liverpool, before joining Brighton.

Over more than two decades, Milner has won three Premier League titles, lifted two FA Cups, and claimed a UEFA Champions League trophy, underlining his enduring impact on English football.

Brighton manager Fabian Hurzeler praised Milner’s work ethic and leadership, calling him “a role model on the pitch and beside the pitch.”

“There’s no surprise why he’s where he is,” Hurzeler said. “He has such discipline and puts in great effort every day. He keeps going, and it’s a great day to show why he is the record-holder regarding Premier League games.”

The Premier League confirmed Milner’s milestone on its official X account, noting that his top-flight career now sets a benchmark that may stand for years to come.
