Renowned Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie and her husband, Dr Ivara Esege, are mourning the loss of their 21-month-old twin son, Nkanu Nnamdi, who passed away on January 7, 2026, after a brief illness. The family alleges that medical negligence at Euracare Hospital in Lagos led to the toddler’s death, citing failures such as denial of oxygen and excessive sedation that caused a heart attack.
The hospital has expressed its “deepest sympathies” but denies improper care, stating that treatment was in line with international standards. However, the child’s aunt, Dr Esege Nwandu, a certified internal medicine physician with 30 years of experience, insists that medical negligence was involved and demands justice for the little boy.
The Lagos State Government has launched an investigation into the incident, with Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu directing the Health Facility Monitoring and Accreditation Agency to conduct a thorough and transparent probe. The Nigerian Society of Anaesthetists is also monitoring the situation and will cooperate with any formal inquiry .
