Nigerian Referees Miss AFCON For 19th Year

Nigerian referees have been left out of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) for the 19th consecutive year, sparking concerns among football stakeholders.

The recently concluded AFCON 2025 featured 73 match officials, but no Nigerian referee made the cut. This trend is attributed to several factors, including low competence, integrity concerns, corruption, and poor physical and technical test results.

Former Nigerian players’ union president, Prince Harrison Jalla, pointed out that Nigerian referees are not meeting the stringent criteria required by CAF and FIFA. He also criticized the NFF referees committee, calling it corrupt and biased.

Ferdinand Udoh, a prominent FIFA-badged referee, echoed these sentiments, citing issues with integrity, favoritism, and inadequate capacity development. He emphasized the need for deliberate referee development and proper use of FIFA funds.

To address this issue, stakeholders suggest certifying Nigerian referees in VAR technology, improving integrity, enhancing physical fitness, and acquiring regular international exposure. The NFF is reportedly working to return Nigerian referees to the big stage of officiating.
