Inaugurated in June, Wrecked by April: Kugbo Terminal Collapses

The newly inaugurated Kugbo bus terminal was heavily damaged Tuesday night after hours of torrential rain and violent windstorms tore through the FCT, leaving the N51bn facility partially collapsed and unusable.

Eyewitnesses said floodwater from the early‑morning downpour overwhelmed drainage around the Kugbo axis at about 9:40pm, sweeping through the terminal’s main concourse. By midnight, sections of the roof had caved in and several loading bays were submerged. Two 60‑foot lighting masts were toppled by wind gusts officials estimated at over 80km/h.

No casualties have been reported, but FCT Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) officials confirmed three security staff sustained minor injuries while evacuating the site. “The terminal is cordoned off. Structural integrity is compromised,” FEMA Director Ibrahim Sabo said at the scene Wednesday morning. “We’re assessing whether it’s a partial or total loss.”

The Kugbo terminal, inaugurated in June 2025 as part of the FCT’s N51bn three‑terminal project under Minister Nyesom Wike, was designed to process 10,000+ passengers daily. It had not yet begun full operations pending Federal Executive Council approval of private managers.

Residents in Kugbo and Nyanya reported flash flooding that carried debris into homes and shops. The Nigerian Meteorological Agency had issued a 48‑hour heavy rain warning Monday, citing intensified seasonal storms linked to shifting weather patterns.

Transport Secretary Ubokutom Nyah told reporters that all inter‑city buses will revert to informal parks along the Abuja‑Keffi road until further notice. “This is a setback for our modernization plan,” Nyah said. “We’ll audit the drainage and construction standards before any rebuild.”

Opposition figures called for a probe into the terminal’s engineering, while the FCT Administration said damage assessment teams and insurers were already deployed. Repairs and timelines remain unclear.

The Mabushi and CBD terminals were not affected, but operations remain suspended across the network pending safety reviews.
