The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has warned residents of Kebbi State to prepare for heavier flooding during the 2026 rainy season.
The alert follows projections in the Nigerian Meteorological Agency’s 2026 Seasonal Climate Prediction and the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency’s Annual Flood Outlook, both of which list Kebbi among states at high risk.
Speaking in Birnin Kebbi, the Head of NEMA’s Sokoto Operations Office, Tukur Abubakar, said rainfall this year is expected to exceed 2025 levels. He cautioned that several communities could experience flash floods, with the peak period likely between July and September.
Abubakar added that the Kebbi River is at risk of overflowing, and a possible 21-day dry spell between June and August may also disrupt farming activities.
The warning is part of NEMA’s ongoing early warning campaign for 2026. Since January, the agency has issued at least four sets of advisories nationwide, covering heatwave and fire risks, flood preparedness, state-level flood alerts, and flash flood warnings.
NEMA advised residents to clear drainages, avoid building on floodplains, prepare emergency kits, and obey evacuation orders. The agency pledged to work with stakeholders to reduce disaster risks across the state.
