Obi Meets Makinde in Ibadan as 2027 Opposition Plots Deepen

Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi on Tuesday held a closed-door meeting with Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde at the Governor’s Office, Secretariat, Ibadan, amid rising opposition consultations ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The meeting comes barely 72 hours after a high-level opposition parties’ summit was held in the Oyo State capital, drawing prominent political actors and stakeholders from across the country.

Obi, a key figure in the coalition movement within the African Democratic Congress, arrived at the Agodi Governor’s Office in the afternoon for what sources described as “strategic political consultations”.

AGENDA NOT DISCLOSED
The agenda of the discussions was not officially disclosed as at the time of filing this report. However, an inside source familiar with the development said the meeting is part of ongoing talks aimed at strengthening opposition cohesion and exploring possible strategic alignments ahead of future political engagements.

The source, who spoke with Vanguard, said details remained tightly guarded but followed recent developments within opposition circles.

JONATHAN MEETING PRECEDES TALKS
The Ibadan meeting also followed Obi’s engagement on Monday with former President Goodluck Jonathan, in a separate round of consultations believed to be connected to broader national political realignments.

Speaking briefly after the meeting with Makinde, Obi said Nigeria’s 2027 elections must be “a critical opportunity to reset the trajectory of our country”.

OPPOSITION REALIGNMENTS
The consultations come as the ADC, now home to several opposition figures, battles a leadership crisis at the Supreme Court. The party has written to Chief Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun warning it risks exclusion from the 2027 polls without a timely judgment.

Meanwhile, a pro-Tinubu group, Ndigbo For Tinubu 2027 Forum, on Tuesday accused Obi, Makinde, Atiku Abubakar, and Rabiu Kwankwaso of plotting an interim government if the ADC loses in 2027. The group cited remarks at the recent Ibadan opposition summit, alleging Makinde hinted at replicating “1965 Operation Wetie” election violence.

Further details of the Obi-Makinde discussions are expected to emerge as consultations continue.
